Koh Tao (“Turtle Island”) is world-famous for diving — but its shallow reefs and crystal-clear water make it one of the best snorkeling destinations in the Gulf of Thailand too.
Our Koh Tao snorkeling trip takes you to the island’s most beautiful bays, where vibrant coral gardens sit in just 1–5 metres of water. You’ll see tropical fish, colourful coral, and — if you’re lucky — sea turtles and reef sharks from the surface.
Why Snorkel at Koh Tao?
- Crystal-clear water — visibility often exceeds 15 metres, making it ideal for surface viewing
- Shallow, protected bays — calm conditions perfect for all swimming abilities
- Incredible marine biodiversity — Koh Tao’s reefs host hundreds of species of fish and coral
- No certification needed — just bring your sense of adventure
- Family-friendly — suitable for children aged 6+ with life jackets provided
Snorkeling Sites
Our crew selects the best sites based on conditions. Popular snorkeling spots include:
- Mango Bay — a sheltered, calm bay with shallow reefs perfect for beginners. Excellent coral coverage and plenty of tropical fish
- Japanese Gardens — a stunning reef garden at the southern tip of Koh Nang Yuan, with soft and hard corals just below the surface
- Aow Leuk — a beautiful crescent bay with white sand and excellent visibility. Turtles are regularly spotted here
- Shark Bay (Ao Thian Og) — famous for juvenile blacktip reef sharks that swim in the shallows. One of the most reliable spots for shark sightings from the surface
Marine Life
Koh Tao’s shallow reefs are incredibly diverse. While snorkeling, expect to see:
Clownfish and anemones · parrotfish · wrasse · butterflyfish · triggerfish · blue-spotted stingrays · sea cucumbers · hawksbill turtles · juvenile blacktip reef sharks · moray eels · colourful nudibranchs · healthy staghorn and brain coral formations
