Koh Tao (“Turtle Island”) is one of the world’s most renowned scuba diving destinations — celebrated for warm, clear water, extraordinary marine biodiversity, and dive sites that cater to every level from beginner to technical diver.
Located in the Gulf of Thailand approximately 90 minutes by speedboat from Koh Samui, Koh Tao offers over 25 named dive sites ranging from shallow coral gardens to the HTMS Sattakut wreck at 30m, dramatic underwater pinnacles, and open-water sites regularly visited by whale sharks and blacktip reef sharks.
Koh Tao Dive Sites
Dive site selection depends on your certification level, group experience, and daily conditions. Your guide will brief you on the chosen sites on the morning of the trip.
Popular sites include:
- Chumphon Pinnacle — a world-class granite pinnacle at 14–30m, carpeted in pink anemones and surrounded by huge schools of fusiliers, barracuda, and the occasional whale shark
- White Rock — excellent for beginners, vibrant coral, turtles, moray eels, and triggerfish
- Mango Bay — calm and sheltered, perfect for first-time boat divers and refreshers
- HTMS Sattakut — a 50-metre decommissioned Thai navy ship resting at 30m, now an artificial reef teeming with life (Advanced certification recommended)
- Shark Island — rocky outcrop with regular blacktip reef shark sightings and stunning hard coral
Marine Life at Koh Tao
Koh Tao’s marine ecosystem is exceptional. On a typical dive day you can expect to encounter:

Itinerary
- 07:45–08:30 — Hotel pickup from most areas of Koh Samui
- 08:30–09:00 — Boat departure from Silent Divers pier
- 09:00–10:30 — Boat trip to Koh Tao (~90 minutes)
- 10:30–12:00 — First dive (briefing included)
- 12:00–13:00 — Surface interval, lunch on board
- 13:00–14:00 — Second dive
- 14:00–15:30 — Return journey to Koh Samui
- 15:30–16:00 — Hotel drop-off

Blacktip reef sharks are a regular feature of Koh Tao dives — they're commonly seen at Shark Island, White Rock, and Chumphon Pinnacle. Whale shark encounters are also possible year-round.
The HTMS Sattakut is a former Thai Navy vessel deliberately sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef. It sits at 30m and is now home to a thriving ecosystem of soft corals, schooling fish, and larger pelagics. Advanced certification recommended.
